On July 1-2, 2020, the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia hosted a Web Seminar on “The Role of Women Negotiators and Mediators in Maintenance of Regional Peace and Security”. The webinar aimed at discussing relevant issues related to women peace and security in the Southeast Asian region as well as identifying possible ways forward to develop more regular interactions among interested parties.
The seminar was divided in three sessions:
- New and Emerging Women, Peace and Security Issues in Southeast Asia and the Role of Women Mediators and Negotiators
- The Role of Women as Negotiators and Mediators at the Peace Table
- Regional Women Mediator Networks: Best Practices from other Regions in Enhancing Women’s Meaningful Participation and Influence in Peace Processes
The meeting was started by the keynote address from H.E. Retno L.P. Marsudi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.
The MWMN was invited to take part in the panel Regional Women Mediator Networks – Best Practices from other Regions in Enhancing Women’s Meaningful Participation and Influence in Peace Processes, where Irene Fellin, Head of the MWMN Secretariat, presented the Network’s history and establishment and analysed how these mediators networks it can contribute to enhancing women’s meaningful participation and influence in peace processes. Members from the other regional women mediators networks also took part in the panel.
