Global Alliance of Regional Women Mediator Networks

The Mediterranean Women Mediators Network Secretariat, in collaboration with WIIS Italy, undertakes the coordination of the Global Alliance of Regional Women Mediator Networks (GA) until the end of 2020.

The Global Alliance was launched in 2019 as the collaborative initiative of several regional women mediators networks established in recent years – namely the Network of African Women in Conflict Prevention and Mediation (FemWise-Africa), the Arab Women Mediators Network – League of Arab States, the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network, the Nordic Women Mediators and the Women Mediators across the Commonwealth – in order to ensure strengthened complementarity, cooperation and coordination among the networks, as well as embodying a collective voice to amplify their common goals, all the while maintaining their respective independence and characteristics.

Women, Peace and Security in the Next 20 Years. Moving Beyond ‘Business as Usual’

On October 8, 2020, one year after the launch of this landmark achievement, the Global Alliance celebrated its first anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325. The High-Level Opening Event gathered Women Mediators Networks (WMNs) members, key partners, academics and policy makers. The interactive panels focused on the past implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda and the work and achievements to date of the Regional Women Mediator Networks.

Between 12-21 October 2020, five Working Groups led by the Regional Women Mediator Networks tackled key themes and stimulated discussions shaping the next 20 years of WPS agenda in mediation: the Protection of Women Mediators and Women Peacebuilders (WMC); the Impact of Covid-19 for Local Peacebuilding and on Local Women Peacebuilders (NWM); Women and Indigenous Knowledge in Mediation and Conflict (FemWise-Africa); the Potential of Hybrid Mediation Models (MWMN); and the Promotion of Women Leadership in Peace and Security (AWMN & WMC).

On October 22, the Global Alliance held its High-Level Closing Event. The event created a space to discuss the policy recommendations and key insights emerging from the five Working Groups organized during the meeting, as well as to collectively look forward to the work of Women Mediator Networks and to the implementation of the Women Peace and Security agenda in mediation for the next 20 years.

The recording of the events is available in French and English on the official YouTube channel of the Global Alliance.
