“There is no formula for perfect communication. Each of you has to find her own way, always giving a personal connotation to the speech. Make it yours.”
On Monday October 26, the sixth meeting of the WIIS Italy Mentoring Programme took place: an online training on Public Speaking held by Azzurra Meringolo, co-founder of WIIS Italy, curator of our blog, and journalist working on external affairs for Giornale Radio Rai.
Azzurra shared with the mentees strategies and tools for an effective communication, developed during her experience as journalist and radio-journalist. Thanks to Azzurra’s valuable advice, le participants learned how to convey and transmit a message effectively and empathetically, generating an interpersonal relationship with the audience.
Firstly, it is necessary to identify your target, in other words who you are talking to. Secondly, you must have clear what you want to communicate: are you trying to explain a concept or to express an opinion? Once these elements are identified, you should aim at clarity of presentation and linearity in structure – with the help of a ‘concept map’ containing ideas and key words you cannot forget. Moreover, the speech should have an element of curiosity, to catch the attention of the audience, and at least an element to discuss in depth, to demonstrate your competence and expertise.
Avoid ‘anglicisms’ and wrong pronunciations. Make use of euphemisms, for a more positive read, formulas to synthesize, repetitions and voice to emphasize.
Azzurra concluded adding one last thing: wherever you are invited to talk, being a professional context, in tv, or in a last-minute interview, pretend all courtesy expressions your male counterparts receive. Your competence must be acknowledged and respected.
